Friday, October 21, 2011

This is friday Oct. 14th day.  Um, yeah I was really over it today. I just pulled back the front and did some motorcycle curls and actually super cute.  Then made a face, cause, you know.  I was over it!
Just so ya all know, my computer or my lack of computer knowledge put the smack down on my little bloggy-blog.  So here is Day 8, a few days late.  Enjoy.

Day 6, Twisty-Braidy-Upity-Thingy

OH boy, here we go again this week.  So, again with the rain, which means no curls.  I went with Braids.  I got 4 or 5 different styles of braids going on today.  I just started going at it, grabbing sections and doing the damn thing, then finished by pinning everything up and over.  It's like Bohme meets the 90's with the sticky-outy pieces.  Till tomorrow, faithful minions.

PS: I am aware of the lighting situation in these pics... I'll pull it together at some point.

Simple Pony Twist

Yup, the last day of the work week and I'm keeping it simple!  Lightly back comb the crown of your hair, leave out a fringe in the front if you want.  Make a low Pony Tail at the base of your neck, separate in the middle and flip your Pony under and pull through over.  Bang.  Done.  And it almost looks like you cared today! Haha!  Peace, Love and Hair people!  Have a great few days off from me!

Hipster

OK, I'll give the back story on yesterdays hair.  Cute, but the rain killed it, so 3 hair styles in one day later...

I'm giving into a hat and straight hair day.  Which brings us to, The Hipster.  Hey, what's the difference between me and a Hipster?...

I'm wearing a knit hat in the winter, a lame Hipster would be wearing a knit hat in the middle of summer at a pool.  See!  Look!  Said Hipster wearing this hat in the middle of June, at a pool in Las Vegas.  Yes, you are supper cool, dumb ass...

Moving on.

So, sick of the rain jacking my hair... I give it.  Straight and a hat, ta-dah.  Not exciting, but I know you can do this.

Day 3 Pin up

Pin Up Hair Slinger, huh.... ok, here's the Pin up look for the 3rd day.  I would give you the blow by blow.  But, we'll save that for another day.  I haven't done this is awhile, and it took it out of me!  It's so hard being a vixen!

Wednesday, October 5, 2011

Ok, day 2- Rocker Curls.  I started with a base Bumble and Bumble Thickening Spray on wet hair, combed through.  Then layered Bumble and Bumble Grooming Cream and also combed though.  Blow dry.  Then sectioned out the bottom of my hair and did some "motorcycle" curls.  Think of how you make a motorcycle go fast... varoom!  Anyway.... do another section, making sure to make the curls go different directions.  Once more, this time back comb your roots a bit then curl.  One more time doing that.  And then finish off the top with the curls.   Spray with a movable Hairspray and let cool.  THAT IS REALLY IMPORTANT.  Your curls will fall otherwise.  Once cool... work through with fingers, think organized chaos.  Wah-la- You got some hip Rocker Style curls.  Ok!  How long did this take you ask?  15mins for curling, 5 mins to blow dry.  Now I am fully aware I do this for a living.... but with a little practice you'll be rocking it out too.

Ok... Finally able to load the pictures... a day late.  Chalk that up to a stereotypical hairdresser!

October... Hell Yes!

So, I've been a complete slacker about this hair bloggy-blog.  So to kick it off in October and to hold me to it.  I'm going to be posting a new style (hair) everyday I work this month.  I thought it was fitting since October is a transformation month, what with Halloween coming up.  SO, enjoy.  I'm just trying to show people to think outside the box when styling your hair.  I hear all the time that my guests are stumped on how to switch up their hair on a daily basis.  This is not a crazy self-absorbed way to post my pic daily!.... or is it!

So here is Oct. 1st.  I wore my hair in a barbie pony tail yesterday, so I had the crease going on, but my hair was clean, so I'm good for another day.  Enter Hat Day.  So now it took about 5 seconds to brush and another 10 seconds to decide on the hat... I took it old school.  PS- you can do this. haha!

Wedding Day Hair and Make Up

With wedding season fast upon us, I thought it would only be fitting that my next blog should be regarding wedding day hair and make up.  If you or someone you know is looking for a Hair Designer and Make Up Artist there are definitely a few things to keep in mind.

Communication is key with your Hair Designer and Make Up Artist.  You as a bride, should feel comfortable with what your Designer is communicating back to you.  Sometimes, this means that you should bring in examples of hair and make up your looking for.  Also, during your initial consultation with your Designer, you should ask to see some of their work.  I always keep my portfolio on hand for my guests, and also direct them to my online portfolio sources.

Don't feel discouraged if you are so overwhelmed by everything and don't know what direction you want to go.  This is not the first time your Hair and Make Up Artists' have heard this.  They should be able to talk to you and both of you come to a great look for your special day.

Remember to always give all the details to your Hair and Make Up Designers.  Time of the wedding is crucial.  We as Designers need to know when we need to have you and your wedding party ready for pictures.  Whether is be before the ceremony or after.

I love to do on location work, but the sooner I know the better for you and for me.  It takes a lot of time to gather the tools of the trade and get from point A to point B.  And then when your Artist gets there, there is set up and break down time to account for as well.

One of the most important things to remember and to follow through is booking your time with your Make Up and Hair Artist.  For example, wedding usually take place on Saturdays.  Well, Saturdays are most people's days off, so in the beauty industry- Saturdays are booked first.  A lot of brides forget or have Wedding Planners that just think the bride's got this one in the bag.  But, often it falls through the cracks.  Book well in advance for your wedding.  And not just your wedding, your practice run.

Which brings me to the practice run.  You all want your wedding day to be perfect... doing a trial/practice run on your hair and make up a few weeks before the big day can take a lot of the "what ifs" out the the wedding day nerves.

Those are just a couple things to think over when you are planning your wedding.  Now let's get to the fun stuff!

My first wedding of the spring season was Gabby.  And it's so easy when they are this gorgeous and a breeze to work with!  Once again, I was excited to hear that her choice of photography was Brenda with Leap Photography.  She is awesome!  It always puts me at ease when I know the photographer is great... she's just going to make the bride look stunning and of course make me look great too!

For Gabby, I did a neutral palette of browns and natural colors, with a bit of shimmer and a nude lip.  Of course a bit more dramatic for the big day, but making sure the bride feels beautiful and confident.  Here's a couple of the shots of Gabby.  Enjoy!

Yeah, I do Hair Extensions....

Hey everyone,

I've been a bit MIA lately, but now I'm on the path of actually doing this thing!

So, I get lots of questions of hair related things I do.  And being a Hair Dresser I just assume that you all know I do it all.  But, in reality there is so much related to hair that I forget- your not a hair dresser, so I should probably remind you of the vast variety of things I do.  Here we go!

First off, obviously, I cut and color hair.  For both women and men.  Both traditional color and cuts, as well as custom color and cuts.  I've trained extensively to find the best and most flattering style and color for your bone structure, life style, coloring and personality.  My last training for cutting I completed was a two day course in Pittsburg offered by Italy Color.  A company that I work for as a Color Educator.  It was an extensive course in straight razor cutting.  Amazing.  I learned so much and continue to use my education in my daily work.

I'm also certified in So.Cap Hair Extensions.  Many people think hair extensions and think it's for people that only want long hair.  Well, it is and it's not.  I've done a lot of people's extensions with the intent of fuller, thicker hair for shorter styles.  You can also do panels and pieces of color with extensions.  That is for people that don't want to color their hair but want a splash of color.  Or want to rock you BRONCE NATION love for a short time- and then take it out and not worry about damaged hair.  Then of course, I have guest that want that long, gorgeous hair, in a couple hours- not a 6 month waiting for your hair to grow out.  I did a lot of research and studies on the different hair extension companies and So.Cap is what I settled on.  It's real hair, extensive training and certification and outstanding reputation sets it apart.  I love it.

I also do wedding and special occasion hair and make up.  I've been involved with a couple of wedding shows in the valley doing the hair and make up for all the models with my co-workers at Dv8 Salon.  I've done extensive stage work for plays, cabaret shows and fashion shows.  From tame to wild, glamorous to understated elegance.  I will travel on location for you if needed.  I work well under pressure and make sure that we are on the same page and understanding your needs for your big day!

Well, I think that pretty much covers it.  If you would like to set up an appointment, please contact me at Dv8 Salon 1-208-342-1003 in downtown Boise, Idaho.

I'd Rather Look Good Then Be Good...

Well, how about a little "get to know ya" session?  Yes, let's do this!  I'm The Pin Up Hair Slinger, aka:  Melissa!  I've been in the business of hair and make up for 7 years and absolutely love every minute!  I believe that all of us have a Pin Up inside us, just waiting for escape.  And if I can help a Pin Up make a Jail break, then my work here is done!

I'm the color educator for Italy Color in Boise, Idaho.  I'm a certified So.Cap Extension specialist.  I love doing hair and make up for everyday events, Bridal, special occasion and stage work.  I also work on location for the above mentioned events and photo shoots.  Whatever you need, I'll make it happen.

Need to book with me?  Of course you do... I'm at DV8 Salon in Downtown Boise Idaho.  1-208-342-1003 1025 Main Street Boise Idaho.

Oh, don't worry... I can rock out men's hair cuts, styles and colors as well.

So, on a more personal note:  I think we figured out, I love hair.  I also love to sing, work out, shop and be creative.  Love coffee, guinea pigs and corgis.  The world needs more glitter.  And I keep waiting for life to burst into technicolor movie complete with musical scores and choreographed dancing for all my friends and family.

And by the way,

I'd rather look good then be good.
